Chest Surgery in Seychelles and Assessment of quality.
M. Todorovic – Seychelles

Abstract: Measuring mortality and non lethal complications rate as direct indicators of quality has for long been utilized and its importance is being further elucidate by many international authorities. Victoria Hospital is the only hospital in Seychelles for acute and short treatments where chest surgery is practiced. There is no other hospital service in the country to compare with and the benchmarking for international comparison is also difficult. In that order indicators of outcome are of local interest mainly in quality improvement and continuous quality control. Chest surgery was not practiced in Seychelles before the year 1990 and for the last 15 years has had great development. This development is presented both in the diversity of surgical chest procedures performed within the general surgical ward and the age of treated patients varying from seven days to 82 years. Outcomes of the quality treatment are difficult to measure as the recommended volume is small. This paper is presenting outcomes of treatment of 132 patients operated from 1989 – 2004 in Victoria Hospital and discusses the meaning of indicators of quality in the given circumstances.
