Blast Injuries: Soft Tissue Management In High Energy Trauma
Vincent Muoki Mutiso, Nairobi - Kenya

Abstract: High energy trauma invariably causes soft tissue injuries which may be closed or open. Appropriate management of these is crucial in achieving a satisfactory outcome.

Accurate clinical assessment and serial debridement in a sterile environment for those that are open assists in achieving a satisfactory result.

Post traumatic counseling, rehabilitation and social reintegration is an important part of the management of the injured individuals in order to achieve a good functional outcome.

There are many classification schemes that aid the surgeon in his management. Examples are the Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) and the Predictor Salvage Index (PSI)

A case report of a blast injury victim from a landmine in Southern Sudan is presented.
