Antegrade sign nailing of the femur in Mulago Hopital Abstract: Lower extremity fractures are a major cause of morbidity. The ideal treatment for diaphyseal fractures of the femur is closed interlocked nailing. Fluoroscopy guidance makes this method expensive for developing countries. A sign nail (interlocking nail) can be done without the need for flouoroscopic guidance. This method has been in use in Mulago Hospital since 2002, 132 patients have had sign nailing. The sign nail was initially designed for the tibia and later was used retrograde for the distal femur and now it can be used antegrade for the femur. The antegrade technique has broadened its use. Study Design: Prospective study. Sample Size: 61 patients have had antegrade sign nailing. Conclusion: Its hoped that this method can be used as an alternative to closed interlocking nailing in centers where fluoroscopy is unavailable. |
